About Zanzibar Big Game Fishing
Zanzibar Big Game Fishing was the first professional deep-sea fishing operation on the island, founded in 1998 by experienced angler and Zanzibar Watersports managing director Chris Goodwin. Based at Nungwi on the northern tip, their location puts them within short range of the Pemba Channel — one of East Africa's most internationally renowned big game fishing grounds and a magnet for marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and giant trevally.
They operate a fleet of three purpose-built fishing boats — Baloo, Ocean Spirit, and Suli Suli — all equipped to international safety standards with fighting chairs, outriggers, live bait tanks, and quality tackle. Half-day and full-day charters are available year-round, with seasonal targets including black and blue marlin (September–December), striped marlin (December–March), and large yellowfin tuna schools (August–October). Barracuda, wahoo, kingfish, and GT are caught year-round.
With over 25 years on these waters, the captains and crew know exactly where to find fish in every season and tide condition. Their tag-and-release ethic for billfish has helped sustain the fishery, and their long-standing relationships with the Nungwi fishing community add local insight that charter-come-latelies simply lack. For serious sport anglers visiting Zanzibar, this is the original and most experienced outfit on the island.
