About Sombrero Stables
Sombrero Stables has been a fixture of the Estes Park horseback riding scene since 1958, making it one of the longest-running trail riding operations in the Colorado Rockies. Their main stable sits on Big Thompson Avenue at the east end of town, with additional locations at Moraine Park and Glacier Creek inside Rocky Mountain National Park, giving riders direct access to some of the most scenic trail riding terrain in the American West.
Ride options range from one-hour introductory rides along the ranch's private trails to four-hour extended rides that climb into the high meadows with sweeping views of the Continental Divide. Specialty rides include breakfast rides with a campfire meal at a mountain overlook and evening steak fry rides where guests ride to a scenic dinner site as the sun sets behind the peaks. All rides are guided by experienced wranglers who match horses to riders based on experience level, and the well-maintained string of trail horses is trained for mountain terrain.
The operation runs across 1,000 acres of private land, meaning rides feel peaceful and uncrowded compared to public trail systems. Sombrero's longevity — nearly seven decades in the same location — reflects the family's commitment to animal welfare, guest safety, and preserving the Western ranching heritage that draws visitors to the Rockies. For families, couples, and groups looking for an iconic Colorado mountain horseback experience, Sombrero remains the gold standard in Estes Park.
