About Exum Mountain Guides
Exum Mountain Guides is the oldest continuously operating mountain guide service in North America, founded by Glenn Exum after his legendary 1931 solo first ascent of what is now called the Exum Ridge on the Grand Teton. Based in Moose, Wyoming, inside Grand Teton National Park, Exum has been teaching climbing and leading alpine expeditions in the Tetons for nearly a century. Their summer office opens each June and operates through mid-September.
Programmes span the full range of Teton climbing: introductory rock courses for families and beginners, intermediate multi-pitch routes, the classic two-day Grand Teton summit climb via the Upper Exum Ridge, and advanced alpine mountaineering. They also offer private guiding for custom objectives, ice climbing in winter, and backcountry ski touring. Group sizes are small — typically two to four clients per guide — ensuring personalised instruction and safety.
What makes Exum iconic is the depth of their guiding heritage. Generations of America's top alpinists have started their careers here, and the service maintains rigorous AMGA certification standards. Climbing the Grand Teton with an Exum guide is a bucket-list experience that draws mountaineers from around the world. Their location inside the park means you step off the trail and onto the rock with minimal approach time.
