About High Plains Hiking
High Plains Hiking is a guided walking and bushwalking operator specialising in the Bogong High Plains and surrounding alpine wilderness of Victoria's northeast. Based in the Kiewa Valley with seasonal operations at Falls Creek village, they run guided day walks and multi-day hiking expeditions through some of the most spectacular and ecologically significant landscapes in the Australian Alps. Their focus is on immersive nature experiences rather than extreme endurance — walks are paced to allow time for wildlife observation, wildflower identification, and photography.
Day walk options include the iconic Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing (with vehicle shuttle), the Rocky Valley Lake circuit, the Bogong High Plains Wildflower Walk (December-February), and a sunset walk to Wallace's Hut — one of the oldest surviving cattlemen's huts in the High Country. Multi-day expeditions include a three-day traverse of the Razorback Ridge to Mount Feathertop and a two-day alpine camping trip with all gear and meals provided. Group sizes are capped at ten to minimise environmental impact and maximise the personal guiding experience.
The guides at High Plains Hiking are qualified ecologists and bushwalking leaders with deep knowledge of alpine flora, fauna, and cultural history. They bring the landscape to life with stories of gold rush-era cattlemen, Bogong moth gatherings by Indigenous Australians, and the unique adaptations of alpine wildlife. For visitors who want to experience Falls Creek beyond the ski season, these guided walks reveal a completely different — and arguably more beautiful — side of the mountain.
