About Mackinac Island Carriage Tours
Mackinac Island Carriage Tours is the world's largest, oldest and continuously operated horse-and-buggy livery, and the official guided carriage tour of Mackinac Island State Park. With roughly 100 freight and passenger carriages drawn by more than 400 horses, the company is woven into the very fabric of island life on a destination where horses replaced automobiles more than a century ago.
The signature offering is a narrated historic and scenic tour, running about one hour and 45 minutes, that winds from downtown up to Surrey Hills and on to landmarks such as Arch Rock and Fort Mackinac. Drivers share the island's history and stories along the way, and tours depart regularly from the office across from Ferry Dock 1 between May and October, with appointment-only service in the off-season. The same livery also handles much of the island's freight and transport.
For first-time visitors, the carriage tour is often the ideal introduction to Mackinac — a relaxed, narrated overview that covers the major sights without the effort of biking or walking the hills. The sheer scale of the operation, its deep heritage, and its status as the official State Park tour make it a cornerstone attraction of any island trip.
