About Blue Ocean Whale Watch
Blue Ocean Whale Watch operates from Moss Landing Harbor, strategically positioned at the closest point to the start of the Monterey submarine canyon — one of the deepest underwater canyons on the Pacific coast. This location gives them a shorter transit time to deep water where the large whales feed, meaning more time watching wildlife and less time motoring out.
Their vessel features a high observation deck designed specifically for whale photography, giving guests elevated sightlines over the water. Tours target humpback whales, blue whales, gray whales on migration, killer whales (especially April-May and September-December), Risso's dolphins, Pacific white-sided dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and harbour porpoises. Sea otters, Mola molas, and migratory seabirds are frequent bonus sightings.
Blue Ocean distinguishes itself through its photography-focused approach and prime Moss Landing position. The high deck vantage point eliminates the spray and obstruction issues common on lower boats, making it a favourite among wildlife photographers. Their naturalists are well-versed in identifying cetacean species and behaviours, helping guests understand the feeding, breaching, and social dynamics they witness on each trip.
