About Bogarin Trail
Bogarin Trail is a regenerated rainforest wildlife sanctuary located just one kilometre west of La Fortuna's central park, making it one of the most accessible nature experiences in the Arenal region. Once cattle farmland, the property has been lovingly restored into a thriving tropical habitat by the Bogarin family, who have dedicated decades to reforestation and wildlife conservation on the site.
The reserve is renowned as one of the best places in Costa Rica to see two-toed and three-toed sloths in the wild, along with toucans, motmots, kingfishers, iguanas, frogs, and other tropical species. Certified naturalist guides lead small-group walks along well-maintained trails, pointing out camouflaged wildlife that most visitors would walk right past. They offer daytime sloth tours, early-morning birdwatching expeditions, and evening night walks where visitors can spot red-eyed tree frogs, kinkajous, and nocturnal birds.
What makes Bogarin Trail special is the combination of easy accessibility and genuinely wild encounters — you can walk to it from downtown La Fortuna, yet the trail feels like deep rainforest. The reserve opens at 5:30am for serious birders and stays open until 6pm, with guided tours departing throughout the day. It's a family-friendly experience suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and the guides are passionate about conservation education.
