About Heart of the Gorge Sailing
Heart of the Gorge Sailing Adventures offers private sailing charters on the Columbia River from Cascade Locks, Oregon, aboard Wy'East — a classic 38-foot Catalina sloop. Named after the Native American legend of Mount Hood, the boat sails through the most dramatic section of the Columbia River Gorge, where towering basalt walls rise on both sides and the river narrows between Oregon and Washington.
All charters are private, limited to a maximum of six guests, and last approximately two hours. The captain and crew handle all sailing duties, though guests who want to learn are welcome to take the helm, trim sails, and tie knots. The sunset sail includes a curated charcuterie board with local cheeses and snacks, and guests can bring their own wine, beer, and beverages. Morning, afternoon, and sunset departure times are available, and custom charters for proposals, small celebrations, or photography shoots can be arranged.
What makes Heart of the Gorge special is the setting and the scale. Cascade Locks sits in the heart of the Gorge's most dramatic scenery, and sailing through it at water level — with Bridge of the Gods overhead and Beacon Rock rising in the distance — is a perspective most visitors never experience. The small group format and experienced captain create an intimate, relaxed atmosphere that large tour boats simply cannot match. For Hood River visitors willing to drive 20 minutes west, this is one of the Gorge's hidden gems.
