About Shell Key Shuttle
Shell Key Shuttle runs the short hop between historic Merry Pier in Pass-a-Grille — the quiet, old-Florida south end of St. Pete Beach — and Shell Key Preserve, an undeveloped barrier island just across the channel. The ten-minute crossing delivers passengers to one of the Gulf coast's best shelling beaches, a stretch of sand with no buildings, no vendors, and frequent dolphin escorts along the way.
The company operates the Corinthian, a 49-passenger, Coast Guard-inspected catamaran, with scheduled departures at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Riders choose how long to stay on the island and catch a later boat back, so a trip can be a quick two-hour shell hunt or a full day of swimming, birdwatching, and beachcombing. Sunset cruises and private charters fill out the schedule, and captains narrate the wildlife — dolphins, rays, and seabird rookeries — on every crossing.
As a participant in the Dolphin SMART program, the crew keeps a respectful distance from wildlife rather than chasing it, a point that matters in a protected preserve. The Merry Pier departure point is itself part of the appeal: Pass-a-Grille's historic beach village makes the before-and-after of the trip as pleasant as the island itself, and parking passes are handled at the pier.
