About Buried Village of Te Wairoa
The Buried Village of Te Wairoa is a heritage and nature attraction located on Tarawera Road, built around the archaeological remains of a 19th-century Maori and European settlement destroyed by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. It combines outdoor walking trails, museum exhibits, and VR experiences to tell the story of one of New Zealand's most significant natural disasters.
Visitors explore excavated whare (houses), the preserved Tohunga's dwelling, and interpretive panels along bush-lined paths that lead to Te Wairoa Falls — a stunning 30-metre waterfall set in native forest. The on-site museum features artefacts recovered from the buried village, interactive displays, and a VR experience that recreates the eruption night. Guided tours are available for deeper storytelling, or visitors can explore at their own pace on self-guided walks. The entire experience typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
What makes the Buried Village unique is its blend of natural beauty, archaeological significance, and immersive storytelling. It is the only attraction in Rotorua where visitors can walk through a genuine excavated settlement while learning about volcanic geology and pre-eruption Maori life. The waterfall trail alone is worth the visit, and the site operates Wednesday through Sunday with last entry at 3:45 PM.
