About Rotorua Rafting
Rotorua Rafting was founded in 2011 by Sam Sutton, a four-time World Champion extreme kayaker who grew up paddling the Kaituna River. Built on deep local knowledge and a genuine love of the river, the company hand-picks its guides for skill and personality, delivering an authentic whitewater experience on one of New Zealand's most iconic Grade 5 rivers.
Their flagship trip takes rafters down the Kaituna River through Okere Falls and over Tutea Falls — at 7 metres, the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world. The journey includes 14 drops across a short but intense stretch of whitewater, with departures running multiple times daily. No prior rafting experience is required; all gear including wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets is provided. They also offer photography packages so guests leave with professional shots of their waterfall plunge.
What distinguishes Rotorua Rafting is its pedigree — founded and staffed by competitive paddlers who know every eddy and rock on the Kaituna. The operation is small and personal compared to the larger rafting companies, which means smaller group sizes, more attention from guides, and a less regimented feel. Their base at Okere Falls is a 15-minute drive from central Rotorua.
