About Ecocentro Danaus
Ecocentro Danaus is a private biological reserve and ecological education centre located in La Fortuna, offering guided wildlife tours through a carefully preserved tropical habitat teeming with sloths, reptiles, birds, butterflies, and amphibians. The reserve combines regenerated secondary forest with purpose-built botanical gardens, a butterfly garden, a frog pond, and a Maleku indigenous cultural exhibit, creating one of the most comprehensive nature experiences in the Arenal area.
Guided tours include daytime wildlife walks where naturalist guides lead visitors along shaded trails to spot sloths, toucans, caimans, and dozens of bird species. Their birdwatching tour departs at dawn when activity is highest, targeting forest species that are hard to find elsewhere in the region. The night tour reveals a completely different world — red-eyed tree frogs, glass frogs, tarantulas, and sleeping birds. The reserve also hosts a Cultural Maleku Indigenous Exposition that introduces visitors to the traditions and craftsmanship of Costa Rica's Maleku people.
Ecocentro Danaus distinguishes itself through its dual focus on conservation and education. The reserve actively participates in reforestation and species monitoring programmes, and the guides are trained naturalists who can identify hundreds of species by sight and sound. The combination of wildlife viewing, botanical gardens, butterfly exhibits, and cultural programming makes it a particularly rich half-day experience — far more than a simple nature walk. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
