About Sloths Territory
Sloths Territory is a family-managed private nature reserve in El Tanque, less than ten minutes from downtown La Fortuna, dedicated to sloth conservation and ecotourism education. The Rodriguez Perez family has transformed their property into a thriving habitat for two-toed and three-toed sloths, along with dozens of other tropical species, creating one of the most reliable sloth-watching experiences in the Arenal region.
The reserve offers daytime sloth tours led by certified naturalist guides who know the habits and favourite trees of the resident sloth population, delivering close-up sightings on virtually every visit. In addition to sloths, visitors regularly spot toucans, parrots, iguanas, monkeys, and poison dart frogs along the reserve's trails. Their night tour is equally popular, revealing nocturnal species including kinkajous, bats, tree frogs, and nesting birds. A dedicated birdwatching tour is available for serious birders looking to add rainforest species to their life list.
What sets Sloths Territory apart from the many wildlife tours in La Fortuna is the intimacy and consistency of the experience. Because the reserve is privately managed and the guides know individual animals by sight, sighting success rates are exceptionally high. The family's genuine commitment to conservation — they actively maintain habitat corridors and rescue injured wildlife — adds depth beyond a standard wildlife tour. Groups are small, the pace is unhurried, and the guides are passionate educators.
