About Mitai Maori Village
Mitai Maori Village is a family-owned cultural experience located in native bush on the outskirts of Rotorua, offering one of the region's most highly rated evening Maori cultural performances. Founded by the Mitai-Ngatai family, it combines traditional storytelling, warrior demonstrations, a hangi feast, and a guided bush walk to natural springs — all in a single evening programme.
The experience begins with a guided walk through native bush to a freshwater spring where visitors can observe giant eels and trout in crystal-clear water. Guests then watch warriors arrive by traditional waka (war canoe) on the stream before settling into the village for a full cultural performance including haka, poi dancing, and waiata (songs). The evening concludes with a traditional hangi dinner — meat and vegetables slow-cooked underground using heated stones — served buffet-style. The entire programme runs approximately three hours including hotel pickup and drop-off.
Mitai is consistently ranked among Rotorua's top attractions on review platforms, distinguished by its intimate bush setting (no concrete or artificial staging), the quality of its performers, and the inclusion of the natural spring walk that most competitors lack. The family ownership means the cultural sharing feels personal and genuine rather than corporate, and the hangi food is widely considered among the best in Rotorua.
