About Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours
Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours runs a one-of-a-kind boat tour over the Alger Underwater Preserve in Munising Bay, where Lake Superior's cold, clear water has preserved wooden schooners for more than a century. Guests look straight down through large glass viewing wells in the hull as intact shipwrecks appear beneath the boat.
The narrated two-hour tour departs from the company's dock on Commercial Street in downtown Munising and passes directly over wrecks such as the Bermuda and the Herman H. Hettler, both resting in shallow water where deck details are clearly visible from the surface. The route also takes in the historic East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island, sea caves and sandstone cliffs, with commentary covering the maritime disasters and Great Lakes shipping era behind each site. Tours run daily through the summer season.
Because the wrecks sit in protected, shallow water, this is the only way to see genuine Great Lakes shipwrecks up close without a wetsuit or dive certification. The tour is a long-standing Munising institution and a favorite rainy-day-proof outing for families, with covered seating and departures timed around calm morning water.
