About Grand Island Ferry Service
Grand Island Ferry Service is the gateway to Grand Island National Recreation Area, the 13,000-acre forested island sitting half a mile off Munising's shore in Lake Superior. The passenger ferry departs from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 2.5 miles west of downtown, and makes the short crossing to Williams Landing throughout the day.
Service runs from the Friday before Memorial Day into mid-October, carrying day hikers, mountain bikers, campers and their gear across the channel. Mountain bike rentals are available right at the ferry dock, opening up the island's roughly 20-mile perimeter loop of two-track past 300-foot cliffs, empty sand beaches and historic cabins. The company also operates the Grand Island Interpretive Bus, a narrated 2.5-to-3-hour van tour that reaches overlooks and historic sites on the island for visitors who prefer riding to pedaling.
As the island's only scheduled ferry and tour operator, the service is the practical linchpin of any Grand Island trip — locals plan entire camping weekends around its timetable. The dock-side bike rentals and narrated tour make a car-free wilderness island feel genuinely accessible for a single-day visit.
