About Pictured Rocks Kayaking
Pictured Rocks Kayaking is the only kayak outfitter on the national lakeshore that launches guests offshore from its own boat. Tours begin at the company's base on Commercial Street in Munising, where paddlers board a custom vessel and cruise through Munising Bay before sliding kayaks into the water directly beneath the cliffs.
The signature trip runs roughly four to five hours with about two hours and five miles of actual paddling along the most dramatic section of shoreline, passing the East Channel Lighthouse and Miners Castle. Because the mothership follows the group the entire time, guests skip the long open-water crossing, can take a break or bathroom stop on board, and ride the boat home when the paddle ends. Tandem kayaks, guides and all gear are included, and no prior experience is required.
The boat-assisted format is what sets the operation apart: it puts first-timers, families and mixed-ability groups under the arches and waterfalls that traditional shore-launched tours spend hours reaching, with a safety net alongside the whole way. It has become one of the most-booked summer adventures in Munising, so July and August departures fill early.
