About Redwoods Treewalk
Redwoods Treewalk is an elevated walkway experience suspended among 120-year-old California Redwood trees in the Whakarewarewa Forest. Connected by 28 suspension bridges at heights up to 12 metres, the 700-metre loop gives visitors a canopy-level perspective of one of New Zealand's most iconic forests — and after dark, the Nightlights experience transforms the walk into a lantern-lit spectacle.
By day, the Treewalk is a gentle 30-minute stroll with interpretation panels covering the forest's ecology and the story of the Redwoods' introduction to New Zealand. The Nightlights session, which begins 20 minutes after sunset, adds over 30 sculptural lanterns designed by world-renowned artist David Trubridge, casting shifting patterns of light through the canopy. Both experiences are wheelchair and pushchair accessible on most platforms.
The Nightlights experience is what puts this attraction in a different league. Most treetop walks are daytime-only, but the after-dark session here has become one of Rotorua's signature experiences — especially in winter when darkness falls early. It's a rare adventure activity that works equally well for families, couples, and solo travellers, and the Whakarewarewa Forest location means you can combine it with mountain biking or a Redwoods walk on the same day.
