About Harv and Marv's Outback Alaska
Harv and Marv's Outback Alaska is Juneau's original small-boat whale watching operation, departing from Auke Bay about twenty minutes north of downtown. Rather than loading dozens of passengers onto a large catamaran, Harv and Marv's built its reputation on six-passenger vessels where everyone gets a window seat and direct access to the captain.
Trips run roughly three hours on the water through the humpback feeding grounds of Stephens Passage and Saginaw Channel, with hotel and dock pickup included. The small hulls let captains position quietly and linger when whales are active, and photographers in particular favor the low-to-the-water shooting angle. Larger vessels carrying up to 18 guests are available for bigger parties, and combination itineraries add a Mendenhall Glacier stop. The season runs May through September, when humpbacks return to Juneau's waters to feed; orcas, Steller sea lions, and harbor seals are frequent bonus sightings.
The differentiator is intimacy. With six guests per boat, tours flex around what the group wants — more time with a bubble-net feeding pod, a slower pass by a haul-out, or an extra glacier photo stop. Captains are longtime local mariners who narrate the biology and the gossip of individual whales they recognize year after year, which is why the company draws so many repeat visitors and referrals.
