About Big Jim's Charters
Big Jim's Charters is one of Juneau's established sportfishing operations, running six-passenger charter boats out of Auke Bay with an office on Hummingbird Lane. The business has been putting anglers on salmon and halibut for roughly four decades, and current owner Mike Bonfils has run it since 2006, keeping the fleet purpose-built for guided day trips on Southeast Alaska's protected inside waters.
Charters target king, coho, and pink salmon along with barn-door halibut, with combination trips chasing both in a single outing. Boats depart Fisherman's Bend Marina on Glacier Highway and fish the waters around Juneau from May through October. All gear is supplied — rods, reels, tackle, and bait — and crews handle filleting and can point guests to processing and shipping so the catch arrives home frozen. Half-day and full-day formats accommodate cruise passengers on port time as well as dedicated anglers, and whale watching and sightseeing charters round out the schedule.
The differentiator is the six-pack format: private-feel trips with a captain focused on one small group, rather than a party boat rail. Captains fish these waters all season and adjust tactics daily, which shows in the consistency of the catch. For visitors who want a serious shot at an Alaska king or halibut with everything handled, Big Jim's is a reliable pick.
