About Above & Beyond Alaska
Above & Beyond Alaska is an employee-owned adventure guiding company based on Sherwood Lane in Juneau, specializing in taking small groups beyond the standard shore excursion circuit. Guiding since 2002, the outfit runs trips from ocean to ice — sea kayaking, glacier trekking, and backcountry camping across the Juneau Icefield and the waters of Southeast Alaska.
Day trips include guided hikes to Mendenhall Glacier, ice-adventure treks that put crampons on guests and get them onto the glacier itself, canoe paddles on Mendenhall Lake, and sea kayaking on Auke Bay. For bigger appetites there are fly-in glacier hikes with packrafting on Norris Glacier, ice climbing sessions, and multi-day camping and paddling expeditions. All technical equipment — crampons, helmets, harnesses, dry gear, kayaks — is provided, and group sizes stay small enough for real instruction. Summer trips run May through September, with select programs shoulder-season.
The company's edge is technical depth. Its guides hold wilderness medical and glacier travel credentials, and the employee-ownership model keeps veteran staff returning season after season. Where most Juneau operators show guests the glacier from a viewing platform, Above & Beyond ropes them up and walks them onto it — a genuinely alpine experience within an hour of a cruise dock.
