About North House Folk School
North House Folk School occupies a cluster of historic buildings on the Grand Marais harborfront, where it has taught traditional northern crafts since 1997. The nonprofit school built its reputation on hands-on learning — students leave with a finished object and a working skill, not just notes.
Course offerings span hundreds of classes a year: wooden boatbuilding, blacksmithing, timber framing, basketry, fiber arts, woodworking, and northern foods among them. Outdoor-focused experiences include sailing programs aboard Hjordis, the school's traditional gaff-rigged schooner, which runs Lake Superior sails from the harbor throughout the warm season. Classes range from two-hour intro sessions to multi-day intensives, and most require no prior experience, making the campus as welcoming to curious tourists as to serious craftspeople.
The school is a cultural anchor for Grand Marais, drawing thousands of students annually and hosting signature events like the Wooden Boat Show & Summer Solstice Festival. For visitors, it offers something few outdoor towns can: the chance to spend a morning kayak-watching on the harbor and the afternoon forging a knife or hoisting sail on a schooner a few steps away.
