E-bike battery failure mid-ride is the worst rental experience you can deliver. A customer 25km from base on a dead battery is stranded, and the van-out recovery destroys your afternoon. The e-bike battery health check exists to catch failing batteries before they ship. Run it weekly on every e-bike in rotation during peak season, and pre-season on the full fleet.
Battery health declines gradually. A battery that delivered full advertised range last season may deliver 70% this season — still technically functional, but customers will notice. Tracking health over time is the only way to predict when to retire a battery (typically 3–5 seasons, 500–800 charge cycles).
Work through each step on every application. Critical steps must pass before the item leaves the shop.
All readings should be taken after a full charge has completed and the battery has rested 15 minutes.
Should read at or near nominal max (e.g. 41.5V for a 36V system). Below nominal = battery degraded.
Most modern e-bikes track this. 500+ cycles = approaching retirement consideration.
Clean contacts, no corrosion or oxidation. Clean with contact cleaner if needed.
Charger output should match battery nominal + 4–5V. Off-spec chargers damage batteries.
Note percentage remaining. Extrapolate full range. Compare to manufacturer spec.
Battery should click securely into the frame. Play or wobble indicates worn mounting.
Build a per-battery history. Retirement decisions use this data.
Build this into your regular operational rotation. In a small shop, the opener runs this as part of morning prep. In larger shops, dedicate a technician or staffer to the task during the opening hour.
