About Mt Stirling Alpine Resort
Mt Stirling Alpine Resort is Victoria's premier destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and non-mechanised alpine adventure, located just a short drive from neighbouring Mt Buller in the Victorian High Country. Unlike the downhill-focused resorts, Mt Stirling offers a quieter, more immersive snow experience through pristine alpine forest and open snowfields, perfect for those who prefer earning their turns.
The Stirling Experience base at Telephone Box Junction operates the region's largest cross-country ski hire and ski school, with a full fleet of classic and skate XC equipment, resort and touring telemark skis, and over 60 pairs of snowshoes. Guided programs run every weekend during the season, including the Sunday Cross-Country Experience (full-day lesson, hire, and mountain tour) and the Saturday Snow-Shoe Wander (an afternoon guided walk through mountain ash forest to historic mountain huts).
Mt Stirling stands apart as one of the few Australian alpine destinations dedicated entirely to human-powered snow travel. There are no chairlifts or snowmaking machines, just natural snowfall, well-marked trails, and the kind of solitude that is increasingly rare in the Australian Alps. It is ideal for families, school groups, and anyone seeking a genuine wilderness snow experience.
