About Northwest Mountain School
Northwest Mountain School is an IFMGA-certified mountain guide service based in Leavenworth, owned and operated by internationally certified guides John and Olivia Race. They offer professional instruction and guided climbs in rock climbing, alpine mountaineering, ice climbing, ski mountaineering, and avalanche education — making them the most credentialed climbing operation in the Leavenworth area.
Their rock climbing programmes run daily from March through October, ranging from half-day beginner lessons at local crags to multi-day courses covering lead climbing, multi-pitch technique, anchor building, and self-rescue skills. Winter offerings include backcountry ski touring in Icicle Creek Canyon, avalanche safety courses (AIARE Level 1 and 2), and ice climbing instruction. All technical gear — ropes, harnesses, helmets, climbing shoes — is provided for courses.
What distinguishes Northwest Mountain School is their IFMGA certification, the highest international standard for mountain guides. Their instructor-to-student ratios are deliberately low, ensuring personalised coaching that actually builds skills rather than just providing a guided experience. For climbers serious about progressing from gym to crag to alpine routes, this is where the progression starts in the Pacific Northwest.
