About Snowy Mountains Backcountry
Snowy Mountains Backcountry is the region's specialist backcountry ski touring and splitboarding operator, guiding experienced skiers and riders into the untouched powder and alpine terrain beyond the resort boundaries. Based in Jindabyne, they provide access to the vast backcountry of Kosciuszko National Park — thousands of hectares of skiable terrain that sees a fraction of the traffic of the resort slopes.
Their guided tours range from introductory backcountry sessions for resort skiers looking to transition into touring, through to multi-day hut-based expeditions traversing the Main Range. Equipment hire includes touring skis, splitboards, skins, avalanche safety gear (beacons, probes, shovels), and camping equipment for overnight trips. They also run avalanche awareness courses and backcountry skills workshops throughout the winter season.
Snowy Mountains Backcountry fills an important niche in Australian snow sports. While the country's ski resorts are modest by global standards, the backcountry terrain of Kosciuszko National Park offers genuine wilderness skiing through snow gum forests and across alpine plateaus, with a character and beauty all its own. Their guides are among Australia's most experienced backcountry practitioners, with international guiding credentials and deep knowledge of local snowpack and terrain.
