About Albatross Encounter Kaikoura
Albatross Encounter is Kaikoura's dedicated pelagic seabird tour operator, sharing its beachfront base at 96 Esplanade with sister company Dolphin Encounter. The business turns Kaikoura's extraordinary concentration of ocean birds into an intimate small-boat experience, taking just twelve passengers at a time out to where the nutrient-rich offshore canyon draws seabirds in remarkable numbers.
On the water, guides use berley to bring the birds in close, giving guests jaw-dropping views of wandering and royal albatross — among the largest flying birds on earth — alongside mollymawks, shearwaters, petrels, penguins, gannets, skuas and terns. Kaikoura is one of the few places worldwide where so many great albatross and lesser albatross species gather year-round, making the tour a genuine bucket-list outing for birdwatchers and photographers, while the running commentary keeps casual visitors engaged too.
The tours are short enough to suit most schedules yet rich in wildlife, and the operator works under strict guidelines to keep encounters respectful and sustainable. With a beachside cafe and gift shop on site and easy pairing with the adjacent dolphin swims, Albatross Encounter rounds out Kaikoura's marine-wildlife offering with a focus on the birds that most visitors never expect to see so close.
