About Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura
Dolphin Encounter is Kaikoura's pioneering swim-with-dolphins operator, based on the beachfront at 96 Esplanade just minutes from the town centre. Running since 1989, the company specialises in encounters with the area's large resident pods of dusky dolphins — one of the most acrobatic and social dolphin species in the world — in their natural ocean habitat rather than any enclosure.
Guests can choose to swim alongside the dolphins or stay dry as a watching passenger. Swimmers are kitted out with full wetsuits, masks and snorkels, briefed by marine guides, then dropped into the open water where pods often number in the hundreds. The watch option aboard the same vessel suits families, non-swimmers and photographers, and onboard naturalists share insight into dolphin behaviour and the wider Kaikoura ecosystem throughout each tour.
Dolphin Encounter is widely regarded as one of the best wild-dolphin swims on the planet and holds a strong sustainability ethos, operating under permit with strict limits on swimmer numbers and interaction time to protect the animals. The beachfront base includes a cafe and gift shop, and the operator shares its building with sister company Albatross Encounter, making it easy to combine marine and seabird experiences in a single visit.
