About Eldhestar
Eldhestar — meaning "Volcano Horses" in Icelandic — has offered the widest variety of horseback riding tours in Iceland since 1986. Based on a working horse farm in the geothermally active Hengill area, roughly 30 minutes from Reykjavik, they keep up to 350 horses in summer and operate year-round with daily departures. Their countryside setting features hot springs, volcanic valleys, and panoramic mountain views.
Their tour menu spans half-day rides, full-day expeditions, and multi-day adventures lasting up to seven days that traverse Iceland's interior highlands. Signature experiences include rides through the steaming Reykjadalur hot spring valley, treks along ancient Viking trails, and combination packages pairing riding with the Golden Circle or whale watching. All tours cater to beginners through advanced riders, with smaller group sizes ensuring personal attention.
Eldhestar also operates Hotel Eldhestar on-site, a 37-room countryside retreat with restaurant, hot tubs, and conference facilities — making them unique among Icelandic riding operators for offering a complete riding holiday experience. Their guides are certified equestrians with deep knowledge of Icelandic horse traditions, and free Reykjavik hotel pickup is included.
