About Ella Spice Garden Cooking Class
Ella Spice Garden runs one of the town's most popular traditional Sri Lankan cooking classes, combining a working spice garden with a hands-on kitchen experience. Sessions begin with a guided walk through the garden, where guests see and smell the cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, turmeric and other spices that define Sri Lankan cuisine, and learn how each is used and grown.
The class itself runs around three hours and is genuinely hands-on: participants cook alongside the host and prepare a full spread of roughly eight authentic dishes, typically including rice, coconut roti, dhal curry, garlic curry, eggplant pickle, okra stir-fry, coconut sambol and papadam. Everyone then sits down together to eat the meal they have made, and guests leave understanding the spice blends and techniques well enough to recreate the dishes at home.
What makes Ella Spice Garden stand out is the warmth and authenticity of the experience — it is a family-style class rooted in home cooking rather than a commercial demonstration kitchen, set against the tea-covered hills of Ella. It consistently ranks among the top-rated cooking classes in the area and is a favourite for travellers who want to take a real taste of Sri Lanka home with them.
