About Nantahala Outdoor Center
Nantahala Outdoor Center is one of the most iconic outdoor adventure companies in the southeastern United States, with its flagship location nestled in the Nantahala Gorge about two hours west of Asheville. Founded in 1972, NOC has grown from a small paddling outpost into a full-service adventure resort that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to experience the rivers and trails of the Southern Appalachians.
Their offerings span guided whitewater rafting trips on the Nantahala, French Broad, Ocoee, Pigeon, and Chattooga rivers, ranging from mild Class I-II family floats to intense Class III-IV rapids. Beyond rafting, NOC operates a paddling school with kayak and canoe instruction, zip line canopy tours, mountain biking excursions, stand-up paddleboarding, and gem mining. They also rent kayaks, canoes, and SUPs for self-guided trips.
What makes NOC stand out is its sheer longevity and depth of expertise — over fifty years of guiding on Southern Appalachian rivers. Their guides are some of the most experienced in the region, many of them competitive paddlers. The Nantahala campus includes on-site dining, lodging, and an extensive outfitter store, making it easy to spend a full weekend adventuring without leaving the property.
