About Taupo Gliding Club
The Taupo Gliding Club offers scenic glider flights over Lake Taupo and the surrounding volcanic plateau, providing a silent, engine-free aerial experience unlike any powered aircraft tour. Operating from Centennial Park airfield just north of Taupo township, they harness thermal currents rising off the lake and volcanic terrain to soar for extended periods.
Trial flights are available for visitors with no prior experience — a qualified instructor handles the flying while passengers enjoy panoramic views of Lake Taupo, the Tongariro volcanoes, and the Waikato River system from above. Flights typically last 20-40 minutes depending on conditions, with the possibility of longer flights when thermals are strong. They also offer introductory courses for those wanting to learn to fly gliders.
The unique appeal of gliding is the silence — without engine noise, passengers experience a serene perspective on the landscape below. The Taupo region's volcanic thermals make it one of New Zealand's premier soaring locations, and the club's experienced instructors have decades of local knowledge about where the best lift conditions develop on any given day.
