About The Original Dolphin Watch
The Original Dolphin Watch has been running dolphin-watching cruises from South Padre Island, Texas since 1989, making it one of the longest-operating eco-tour businesses on the island. Trips depart from Sea Ranch Marina on the southern end of the island and explore the Laguna Madre and the waters around the Brazos Santiago Pass.
Cruises are family-friendly outings built around the resident bottlenose dolphin population, with crews narrating dolphin behavior, local history, and bay ecology along the way. Many trips include a trawl-net demonstration that brings up shrimp, crabs, and other bay life for passengers to see up close before release, turning each cruise into a floating marine-biology lesson.
Decades on the same waters give the crews an unusual familiarity with individual dolphin pods and their patterns, which translates into consistently high sighting rates. The combination of longevity, hands-on marine education, and daily departures has made The Original Dolphin Watch a fixture of the South Padre visitor experience across multiple generations of returning families.
