About Apollo Bay Surf & Kayak
Apollo Bay Surf & Kayak is the Great Ocean Road's best-known sea kayaking operator, running guided paddles to the Australian fur seal colony within the protected Marengo Marine Sanctuary just south of Lorne. The signature Kayak to Seals tour takes paddlers out in stable sit-on-top kayaks for a close encounter with one of the coast's most charismatic colonies of wildlife.
The seal kayaking tour runs for around an hour and a half of instruction and touring with qualified guides, and all equipment — wetsuit, PFD, helmet, kayak and paddle — is included, making it accessible to beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Beyond the seal tours the business also offers surf lessons and beach hire, covering surfboards, bodyboards and stand-up paddleboards for visitors exploring the bay.
What makes the experience special is the chance for curious fur seals to swim right up to the kayaks for a closer look, an encounter that simply isn't possible from shore. With small group sizes, local guides who know the sanctuary's conditions, and a strong safety record, Apollo Bay Surf & Kayak has become a must-do for adventurous visitors travelling the Great Ocean Road.
