About Backcountry Saddle Expeditions
Backcountry Saddle Expeditions offers guided horseback riding through the stunning high-country landscapes of Central Otago, operating from their base in the Hidden Valley between Clyde and Alexandra — a short drive from Wanaka. Founded by experienced horse people with deep roots in the region, the company provides an authentic New Zealand station experience on well-schooled, calm horses suited to riders of all abilities.
Rides range from one-hour introductory treks along river flats to half-day and full-day expeditions that climb into the golden tussock hills with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The terrain takes in historic gold-mining trails, native bush, river crossings, and open ridgelines — a landscape that featured prominently in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All safety gear is provided and rides are guided by experienced locals who share stories of the region's pastoral and mining heritage.
Backcountry Saddle stands out for the sheer beauty of its private riding country, the quality of its horses, and the genuine backcountry feel of the experience. It's one of the few riding operations in the Wanaka-Queenstown corridor that takes guests well beyond tourist trails into real working station country, making it a favourite for families, couples, and experienced riders alike.
