About Corolla Outback Adventures
Corolla Outback Adventures is the original family-owned wild horse tour service in Corolla, tracing its roots back to Bender's Beach Services which began guiding visitors along the northern Outer Banks in 1962. Today the company operates from Ocean Trail in Corolla and remains one of the most trusted names for off-road wild horse safaris on the OBX.
The signature tour is a two-hour, 30-mile round-trip off-road adventure heading north through the 4x4-only beaches toward Carova and the Virginia border. Guests ride in open-air safari vehicles while guides point out the Colonial Spanish Mustangs, shorebirds, and other wildlife along the way. The route passes through several refuge areas and the Wild Horse Estates conservation easement, offering a less commercialized feel than some of the busier tour operators. Kayak eco-tours through the Currituck Sound are also available for visitors who prefer a paddle-powered adventure.
What distinguishes Corolla Outback is the depth of local knowledge that comes from over six decades of family operation on these beaches. The guides know the horse herds by name, understand the shifting sand roads better than anyone, and share genuine passion for conserving the fragile barrier island ecosystem. It is the kind of authentic, homegrown OBX experience that chain operators simply cannot replicate.
