About Ella Organic Tea Garden
Ella Organic Tea Garden offers a hands-on Ceylon tea experience in the hill country that surrounds Ella, one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated tea-growing regions. Rather than a factory production line, the focus here is a small, organic garden where visitors walk the tea slopes, learn how the leaf is grown without chemicals, and see the full journey from bush to cup.
Guided tours cover plucking, withering, rolling, oxidation and drying, and finish with a guided tasting of different grades and styles of Ceylon tea. Guests get to try their hand at picking the classic two-leaves-and-a-bud, hear how elevation and terroir shape flavour, and enjoy the tea alongside views over the surrounding valleys. Sessions are intimate and suited to couples, families and solo travellers who want a slower, more educational counterpoint to Ella's adrenaline activities.
What makes the garden notable is its organic, small-batch ethos in a district dominated by large estates — visitors get personal attention, an honest look at sustainable cultivation, and the chance to buy freshly processed tea directly from the people who grew it. It has become a favourite stop for travellers wanting to understand what makes Ceylon tea world-famous, right in the heart of tea country.
