About Kayak Connection
Kayak Connection has been exploring the waters of Monterey Bay from the Santa Cruz Harbor for over 30 years, establishing itself as one of the most trusted paddling outfitters on California's Central Coast. Located at 413 Lake Avenue in the protected Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor, the shop provides easy access to over a mile of calm, sheltered waterways that open directly into the Pacific Ocean. Whether you are a first-time paddler looking for a gentle harbor cruise or an experienced kayaker ready to navigate open-ocean swells, Kayak Connection has the gear, the knowledge, and the launch point to make it happen.
Rentals include single and tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and all necessary safety equipment, available by the hour or for multi-hour sessions. Beyond self-guided rentals, Kayak Connection runs guided kayak tours through the kelp forests of Monterey Bay in search of southern sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, dolphins, and seasonal whale sightings — including gray whales in spring and humpbacks through summer and fall. They also operate from a second location at Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing, where guided paddles wind through one of the richest tidal estuaries on the West Coast.
What sets Kayak Connection apart is the combination of two distinct paddling environments under one operation. The Santa Cruz Harbor offers calm, beginner-friendly waters with stunning views of the Walton Lighthouse, while Elkhorn Slough delivers world-class wildlife encounters in a protected wetland habitat. Their experienced guides tailor every trip to the group's skill level, and the shop's long tenure means they know exactly where the otters raft, where the seals haul out, and when the whales are running.
