About River Canyon Adventure
River Canyon Adventure is a kayak and stand-up paddleboard outfitter tucked into the Tennessee River Gorge on River Canyon Road, about 15 minutes west of downtown Chattanooga. Their launch point sits in one of the most stunning stretches of the Tennessee River — a deep, forested gorge often called the Grand Canyon of Tennessee — giving paddlers immediate access to calm, scenic water surrounded by towering bluffs.
The company rents single and tandem kayaks as well as stand-up paddleboards by the hour or half-day. Self-guided paddling is the primary format, with staff providing route suggestions, safety briefings, and shuttle coordination. The gorge water is generally flat and beginner-friendly, making it a popular outing for families, date-day couples, and groups looking for a low-key river experience without the intensity of whitewater. Seasonal guided tours and sunset paddles are also offered.
River Canyon Adventure's biggest asset is its location. While downtown Chattanooga has multiple paddle rental options, paddling inside the gorge itself — surrounded by old-growth forest, limestone cliffs, and minimal development — is a completely different experience. The quiet, off-the-beaten-path setting attracts wildlife (herons, eagles, turtles) and gives the outing a backcountry feel that's rare this close to a mid-size city.
