About Sandcastle Lessons
Sandcastle Lessons teaches families how to build professional-quality sandcastles on the beaches of South Padre Island, Texas. Founded and taught by American sandcastle champion Andy Hancock, the business turns a beach-day pastime into a structured, hands-on class — and it is one of the island's most distinctive activities.
Lessons run one to three hours and come to the student: instructors meet families on the beach near their hotel or rental with all tools provided, and the toolkit techniques stay useful for the rest of the vacation. Classes are STEM-based, teaching why sand structures stand up — compaction, water content, carving order — not just how to shape them. Advanced sessions cover large-scale forming and competition-level technique for returning builders.
The champion pedigree is the differentiator: students learn the same proven system Hancock developed and competes with, taught personally rather than through a franchise. Availability is limited and lessons book out around Spring Break, summer, and holiday weeks, which says a great deal about how consistently the experience delivers for families.
