About Surf Island
Surf Island is western Crete's premier wind and wave sports operator, running three beachfront stations at Elafonisi, Falasarna, and Kalamaki Beach near Chania. Operating from May through October each year, the company covers the full spectrum of board sports — windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding — with equipment rental and professional instruction available at every location.
The Falasarna station catches the powerful Meltemi wind that funnels down through the western Cretan coast, delivering consistent conditions that attract intermediate and advanced windsurfers and kitesurfers from across Europe. The Elafonisi station, set beside the famous pink-sand lagoon voted one of the ten best beaches in the world, provides a calmer environment ideal for beginners, with a shallow sandy pool serving as a natural training ground. Kalamaki Beach near Chania rounds out the network with reliable westerly winds for wing-foiling and windsurfing sessions.
Surf Island's multi-station setup is its biggest advantage. Depending on the day's wind direction and swell, instructors direct guests to whichever station has the best conditions — a flexibility that single-location schools simply cannot match. The gear fleet is modern and well-maintained, and certified instructors teach in multiple languages. For anyone visiting western Crete with an interest in wind or wave sports, Surf Island covers every base across three of the island's most spectacular beaches.
