Azores Surf Center is a surf school and rental shop located at Praia dos Areais de Santa Barbara in Ribeira Grande — the north coast beach that produces the best and most consistent surf on São Miguel. Founded in 2013 by Josephine and Ricardo, the centre has grown from a two-person passion project into one of the island's most popular surf destinations, drawing beginners, intermediates, and experienced surfers from across Europe.
They offer structured surf lessons for all levels, from first-timer introductions on the beach break through to advanced coaching on the reef setups further along the coast. Surfboard and wetsuit rentals are available for independent surfers who just need gear, and they stock a range of boards from foam longboards to high-performance shortboards. SUP lessons and rentals round out the water activities, and their beachside location means you can walk from briefing to lineup in under a minute.
