About Hi-Tech Surf Sports
Hi-Tech Surf Sports has been a pillar of Maui's board-sport scene since 1982, when shaper Craig Maisonville opened the original store in Paia during the golden age of Hawaiian windsurfing. Now under the sole ownership of industry pioneer Kim Ball—who joined as partner in 1984—the company has grown to five locations across the island, including shops in Kahului, Kihei, and the Westin Ka'anapali resort. With over four decades of experience, Hi-Tech is widely regarded as the most established surf retailer on Maui.
The rental and demo fleet is the largest on the island, spanning surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, bodyboards, windsurf rigs, kitesurf gear, foils, and skimboards. Whether you need a soft-top for your first wave or a high-performance shortboard for Honolua Bay, Hi-Tech stocks boards for every ability and style. Their retail floors carry top brands like Sharpeye, Dakine, and Vans alongside apparel, accessories, and a dedicated skateboarding section, making each location a one-stop shop for anything board-related.
Beyond gear, Hi-Tech is deeply woven into the Maui community—organising surf meets, skate events, windsurfing races, and fishing tournaments year-round. After the 2023 Lahaina fire, the team launched a "Rebuild Lahaina" fundraiser benefiting the Maui Sports Foundation. For visitors who want to rent from a shop with genuine local roots and encyclopaedic knowledge of every break on the island, Hi-Tech Surf Sports is the definitive choice.
