About Inside the Volcano
Inside the Volcano offers one of the most unique adventure experiences on Earth — descending into the magma chamber of the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano in Iceland's Blafjoll Country Park, just 20 kilometres southeast of Reykjavik. Operated by 3H Travel, a licensed Icelandic tour operator founded in 2012, this is the only place in the world where visitors can enter the inner workings of a volcanic magma chamber.
The experience begins with a 3km hike across a lava field to the volcano's crater rim, followed by a 120-metre descent via an open cable lift into the cathedral-sized magma chamber below. Inside, the walls display vivid reds, purples, yellows, and blues — mineral deposits left behind when the magma drained away roughly 4,000 years ago. Guides explain the geology at each stage. The full tour takes about 5-6 hours including the hike and descent, and runs from mid-May through October.
Thrihnukagigur is a geological anomaly — most magma chambers collapse after eruption, but this one remained intact, creating a cavern large enough to fit the Statue of Liberty inside. The tour has received international press coverage from National Geographic, BBC, and CNN, and consistently ranks among Iceland's top-rated experiences. Hotel pickup from Reykjavik is available.
