About Lajoie Stables
Lajoie Stables is a family-owned horseback riding operation in Jeffersonville, Vermont, about twenty minutes from Stowe and just down the road from Smugglers' Notch Resort. They are Vermont's only year-round riding stable, offering guided trail rides through 100 acres of pine forests and mountain fields regardless of the season. In winter, they swap saddles for sleigh runners and offer horse-drawn sleigh rides through snow-covered meadows — one of the most popular winter experiences in the Stowe area.
Trail rides are one hour long and follow scenic routes where it is common to spot deer, wild turkeys, and other Vermont wildlife. No prior riding experience is necessary — the guides help each guest mount and dismount and match riders with appropriate horses. Pony rides for young children are also available. The sleigh rides accommodate small groups and make a romantic or family-friendly outing during the snow months, with warm blankets provided for the journey through the winter landscape.
Lajoie Stables has been operated by the same family for two generations, building a loyal following among both locals and visitors. Rides are affordable at around fifty dollars per person, and reservations are taken by phone. Their partnership with Smugglers' Notch Resort means many resort guests discover the stables as part of their vacation, but the experience feels authentically Vermont — small-scale, personal, and surrounded by working countryside rather than resort infrastructure.
