About PB Surf Shop
PB Surf Shop has been operating on the Pacific Beach boardwalk since 1962, making it the oldest surf shop and surf school in San Diego. Current owner Randy Strunk — a lifelong surfer, open-ocean prone paddler, and outrigger canoe enthusiast — took over in 1993 and has maintained the shop's no-frills, family-oriented character ever since. As the only surf shop in Pacific Beach located directly on the boardwalk, guests can rent a board, walk down the steps, and be in the waves within seconds.
The rental inventory spans foam boards from five-foot-six to ten feet for beginners, and premium fiberglass and epoxy shapes from acclaimed local shapers including T. Patterson, Rusty, Gary Linden, Donald Takayama, and Hank Warner for intermediate and advanced surfers. Bodyboards, skimboards, wetsuits, and beach cruiser bikes are also available by the hour or by the week. The on-site surf school — San Diego's original — teaches over 3,500 students annually through daily group and private lessons, week-long summer camps for kids, and advanced coaching sessions, all led by CPR-certified instructors with lifesaving training.
Sixty-plus years of continuous operation have earned PB Surf Shop five-star ratings on TripAdvisor, Google, and Yelp, along with an A-plus BBB rating with zero complaints. The shop's hot outdoor shower, boardwalk deck with surf-check benches, lockers, and changing rooms make it a natural gathering point for the Pacific Beach surf community. Whether you need a reliable foam board for your first wave or want to demo a hand-shaped performance shortboard from one of San Diego's premier craftsmen, PB Surf Shop delivers six decades of local wave knowledge with every rental.
