About Rio Secreto
Rio Secreto is a certified nature reserve five kilometres south of Playa del Carmen, protecting one of the Yucatan Peninsula's most spectacular underground river systems. The reserve encompasses over 600 metres of semi-flooded caverns adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and ancient geological formations that have been developing for millions of years. It is a world-class eco-tourism attraction unlike anything else in the Riviera Maya.
Visitors explore the cave system on guided walking and wading tours through waist-deep crystal-clear water, wearing wetsuits, helmets, and headlamps. The Classic Tour covers approximately 600 metres of underground passages over 90 minutes, while the Plus and Wild tours go deeper into less-visited chambers. A traditional Mayan ceremony is included at the cave entrance. All tours include round-trip transport from Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya hotels, lockers, towels, and a buffet lunch with local cuisine.
Rio Secreto has earned international recognition as a sustainable tourism operation, holding EarthCheck and Rainforest Alliance certifications. The cave system was only discovered in 2004 and is carefully managed to limit daily visitor numbers. For travellers looking beyond beaches and cenotes, Rio Secreto offers a genuinely awe-inspiring geological experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in Mexico.
