About Turning Heads Kennel
Turning Heads Kennel is a working sled dog kennel on Herman Leirer Road near the entrance to Exit Glacier, a few miles outside downtown Seward. Founded and run by competitive mushers who have raced the Iditarod, the kennel opens its doors to visitors who want to experience authentic Alaskan dog mushing culture up close rather than through a staged attraction.
Summer visitors ride a wheeled training cart pulled by an enthusiastic team of racing huskies along forest trails, then spend time in the dog yard meeting the athletes and cuddling puppies. In winter, tours switch to real sled runs on snow, and the kennel also offers a helicopter-accessed glacier dog sledding experience for guests who want to mush across a snowfield in midsummer. Tours run in small groups and suit all ages and fitness levels.
The difference here is the mushers themselves — guests learn about training, nutrition, and race strategy from people who live the sport year-round, and the dogs are genuine long-distance athletes rather than tourist props. It is consistently rated among the top activities in Seward for families and anyone curious about the state sport of Alaska.
