About Whangamata Surf School
Whangamata Surf School operates on the consistent beach breaks of Whangamata, one of the Coromandel's premier surf towns and a long-time favourite of New Zealand wave riders. Based at Esplanade Drive near the main beach, the school introduces beginners to surfing in a safe, supportive environment while also helping intermediate surfers refine their technique.
Lessons cover ocean safety, paddling, popping up and reading the waves, with all soft-top surfboards and wetsuits included in the price. The school runs private one-on-one sessions, small-group lessons and family bookings, plus board and wetsuit hire for those who already know their way around the lineup. Whangamata's gently sloping sandy beach and reliable swell make it an ideal spot to learn, and instructors keep ratios low so everyone gets plenty of waves.
Led by experienced local surfers with strong knowledge of the beach and its conditions, Whangamata Surf School blends genuine coaching with the laid-back surf culture the town is known for. Whether catching a first wave or hiring a board for a free surf, it is a friendly base for getting in the water on the Coromandel's east coast.
