About Dive Key West
Dive Key West, operated under the Captain Hook's banner, is the largest and most established full-service dive centre on the island, located on North Roosevelt Boulevard with direct access to the dock. Their boats head out daily to explore the only living coral barrier reef in North America, part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, as well as the famous USS Vandenberg — a 523-foot former military transport ship sunk in 2009 to create one of the world's largest artificial reefs. With multiple departures each morning, divers can choose between shallow reef sites ideal for beginners and deeper wreck dives suited to advanced certifications.
The shop holds a Blue Star Operator designation, recognising their commitment to reef conservation and responsible diving practices. Full-time certified instructors run PADI courses from Discover Scuba introductory sessions through Advanced Open Water and specialty certifications, making Dive Key West a one-stop destination for visitors who arrive as snorkelers and leave as certified divers. Group sizes are kept small to ensure personalised attention both on the boat and underwater, and the crew's "teach fun" philosophy keeps the atmosphere relaxed even during training dives.
On the retail side, the shop carries a comprehensive inventory of new gear for sale alongside a full rental fleet covering masks, fins, snorkels, wetsuits, BCDs, regulators, and dive computers. Equipment repair and maintenance services are available on-site, handy for travelling divers whose gear needs a tune-up mid-trip. Private boat charters and guided snorkeling tours round out the offerings for non-divers in the group, and sandbar excursions provide a laid-back alternative for families with young children who want to enjoy the water without going below the surface.
